Great migration: Day 3

Day 3. The scenery is amazing, the wildlife incredible, the roads...well, the roads barely exist, and what does exist is gravel and perpetually under construction.

We took out at 6:00AM, aiming for Tok. We weren't sure we would make it, but that was today's destination. I have discovered a love for Tim Horton's. Except in the wee hours of the morning, it was the contractors, oil guys, and me, and lots of sidelong looks. If you know me, I don't do mornings, so it was eyes ahead, waiting for my coffee.

On Day 2, we saw some live animals: a bear, eagles, an osprey. Today, though, we saw lots of road kill before we were off the paved highway: procupine, bear, small moose, a coyote or a wolf--not sure. The road kill here is huge.

Once we were off the paved roads, though, the animals were still alive: caribou, moose, buffalo, bear, a field mouse (yeah, even this is exciting to me), and hawks. The bears were crossing the road, and the key when traveling these roads is to watch where others are pulled off since this means that there is wildlife around. At other points, you just get lucky to be looking in the right direction and see the animals run across the roads or fly over you.

We made it through BC and into Yukon Territory--THE YUKON TERRITORY! We stopped by the license plate forest and then stayed in Watson Lake in a territory campground and pulled into family camping since we had the large moving truck and our car in tow--we take up a lot of room. It was so quiet it was eerie. This was also the first night we needed our jackets because it was cold...and drizzly before it began to rain in earnest, just about the time we were getting dinner stuff out (sandwiches) and the tent set up.  We dragged the tent into a pavilion, and Scott got a raging fire going in the barrel fireplace. We ate dinner, took a walk to find where to pay for the campsite but had no luck, so we just wandered back to the campsite and headed to bed.

I am just going to bombard you with pictures, now, and this post will probably need to be split into two just to handle all of these photos.

Enjoy BC:

This is a very long drive.
